I love that photographer Steven Meisel is now referencing himself. For the new Balenciaga advertisements he has taken inspiration from his own back catalogue and images he created twenty years ago for Versace. Both feature the same juxtaposition of upmarket fashion in a downbeat, downtown environment – bare floorboards and crumbling walls. This new set of photographs document the final collection for the house by Nicolas Ghesquière, which prompted one commentator to note: ‘Skin was big news, and with it more than a whiff of sex.’ Sound familiar? The collection included bra tops and bared midriffs, toga-style skirts and tweeds that turned out to be complex embroideries…

Photographer: Steven Meisel
