AND SOMEONE JUST ASKED ME IF THE GROUP WOULD WEAR SUITS

Recently while researching the upcoming Laura Ashley: The Romantic Heroine exhibition I was thrilled to see this black and white print pinned on the wall at the Laura Ashley archive in Fulham. The image is from a session that was used for the 1977 Laura Ashley calendar, which is a treasured object in my personal collection. The photograph is by Jane Ashley and features The Clash members Mick Jones and punk heart throb Paul Simonon along with Viv Albertine and Palmolive from The Slits. I was told by the archivist Angela Jeffery that they were each given a tenner to do the shoot but Palmolive was still not keen unless the clothes she was asked to wear could be dyed black (obviously not the norm in the colourful world of Laura Ashley). The resulting image captures perfectly the air of punk insouciance wrapped up in a utopian dream.
